Prof. Schwartz has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware since 1987. He is also a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Delaware in the fields of Mechanical, Civil, and Aerospace Engineering. His professional interests include fluid mechanics, especially viscous flows, free-surface flows, applied mathematics, analytical mechanics, aerodynamics, particularly wind turbine aerodynamics, and heat transfer. Prof. Schwartz formulates and solves mathematical models of real-world phenomena using perturbation techniques and various numerical methods. Most of his recent research has been in coating flows, that is the flow and drying behavior of thin layers of viscous liquids on solid surfaces. Of special interest are flows of complex liquids and solid surfaces that are geometrically complicated and/or physically rough and/or chemically contaminated. He has consulted for industry for many years, including paint companies, makers of personal care products, and spectacle manufacturers, and has served as an expert witness in legal proceedings.
