EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Jenni M. Buckley is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Delaware (UD), where she is a proud alumna (BME 2001). She received her PhD (2006) in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of California, San Francisco. She has nearly 25 years of engineering experience in product design with an emphasis on medical devices, consumer products, and design validation.

As an educator, Dr. Buckley teaches many popular laboratory, design, and technical elective courses in mechanical engineering, and she holds a secondary appointment in the UD School of Education. Dr. Buckley is committed to inclusive, accessible, and relevant learning environments for engineering students. She founded and now co-directs The Design Studio, a nationally recognized academic makerspace for design education at UD. Dr. Buckley also is the Co-Founder of The Perry Initiative, an education-focused non-profit organization that builds the talent pipeline in orthopaedic surgery and engineering. Dr. Buckley’s scholarly work in education focuses on workforce development as well as designing and disseminating research-based and standards-aligned curriculum and pedagogy. She has a strong publication record in engineering education and has been awarded federal (NSF), state, foundation, and industry funding for her work in this area. With her educator collaborators, Dr. Buckley has created and disseminated curriculum that is used in K12 and college classrooms nationally and has an ongoing partnership with Project Lead The Way.

Dr. Buckley has received numerous university and national awards for her teaching and service, including the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Distinguished Teaching Award, ASEE “20 Under 40” National Award, the UD Excellence in Teaching Award, and the UD Excellence in Scholarly Engagement Award.
