Welcome
Welcome to UD's Department of Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering is the broadest of the engineering disciplines giving students a wide range of opportunities. With a degree in mechanical engineering, you can find work in many industries such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical engineering, consulting, manufacturing, petroleum engineering, structural engineering, or thermal and mechanical design. Because mechanical engineers have such broad exposure to fundamental engineering science and design, they are also frequently drawn into business, finance or law.
Our graduates are prepared to face the challenges they will encounter – no matter which path they choose.
- Our undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, and is flexible and responsive to students’ needs.
- Undergraduate students are encouraged to work directly with faculty in state-of-the-art research projects.
- In Senior Design, students work in groups of four with a local company, solving design problems for their company sponsor.
- The Department’s graduate research program is recognized internationally and includes many cross-disciplinary interests. Specific areas of research focus include:
The Department hosts the Center for Fuel Cells and Batteries and the Center for Biomechanical Engineering Research. We also have strong ties with several strategic campus-wide institutions such as the Center for Composite Materials, the Center for Carbon-free Power Integration, the Delaware Energy Institute, the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, and the Delaware Environmental Institute. Campus-wide initiatives in advanced manufacturing include the establishment of two National Networks for Manufacturing Innovation, RAPID and NIIMBL. All centers and institutes offer opportunities for collaborative research.
